Jerry West 1960 Gold Medal is His Most Cherished Award

Four-Part Video Podcast “A Very Jerry Christmas” Part Two Drops December 24th

7428 Studio - I have always been fascinated by the Olympic Games.  One of the earliest memories of my life was, as a four year old, trying to understand why the adults around me were so upset. The adults were outraged as they watched American athletes Tommie Smith and John Carlos raise their fists, barefoot on the medal stand during the national anthem at the ’68 Games in Mexico City.

Four years later, I learned a hard life lesson about what terrorism looks like, as I watched the ’72 Munich Games.  Members of the Palestinian Black September organization launched an assault that led to the deaths of 11 athletes. In what came to be known as the “Munich Massacre”, I sat and listened to the ABC news anchor Jim McKay announce that, “they’re all gone.” It was terrifying.

A few days later, I could not believe what I was seeing. Basketball officials at the Rudi-Sedlmayer-Halle gave the USSR team chance after chance to beat the USA team for the Gold.  It was the most controversial game in international basketball history, and I was pissed.

But I have never lost faith in what the Olympic Games are really all about.  They represent the best, and certainly sometimes, less than the best of what humans can be.  Sometimes politics played a role for the worst, but most of the time the Olympics provided a place for humanity, and for athletes to show us what excellence looks like.

As I got older and learned more about the history of the Games, the one that stood out most to me was the 1960 Olympics.  With a historic backdrop like Rome, and of course the fact that the Olympics had always been designated with “Roman Numerals”, the stories of the Games of the XVII Olympiad rank (at least in my mind) as the best:

And then, there was Jerry and OscarJerry West from West Virginia University and Oscar Robertson from the University of Cincinnati were the co-captains of the ’60 men’s USA Basketball team, the first true “Dream Team”.

West was the ’59 NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player, Robertson the two-time Helms College Player of the Year, both collegiate All-Americans, and the top two picks in the 1960 NBA Draft.   Oscar went first to the Cincinnati Royals (a team that eventually became the Sacramento Kings), Jerry next to the Minneapolis Lakers (future Los Angeles Lakers that same year), and they would launch careers as two of the greatest guards the NBA has ever seen.

But first, there was Rome.  The USA team was coached by the legendary Pete Newell, whose Cal Bears team beat Jerry and his West Virginia Mountaineers 71-70 for the NCAA title in ’59. The team was more than ready.  Team USA, never really challenged, won all their games and the country’s fifth straight Olympic Championship.   West, 22 at the time, has always considered the gold medal he won in Rome his most prized award.

In 2019 at the White House, upon receiving the nation’s highest civilian honor, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, West remembered many of his “exhilarating victories” over the span of his life during his acceptance speech.  He then continued, “But the one I cherish most was with a group of fellow American amateurs at the 1960 Olympics.  As I stood on the Gold Medal Stand in Rome next to my friend and soon-to-be adversary, Oscar Robertson, I thought about my brother, David, who had died fighting in Korea when I was 13 and how proud I was to represent the United States of America and the state of West Virginia. I tried in my life to do for others what David did for me: lead, protect, and assist whenever possible.”

Our SSDL four part interview with Jerry West continues this week with part two of a four-part series that we are calling, a “Very Jerry Christmas”.   For me, to be this close to Olympic greatness and history is my own version of a Christmas miracle.

“Go Jerry West, Young Man”

Four-Part Video Podcast “A Very Jerry Christmas” Begins December 17th

December 16, 2020

7428 Studio -  My godmother, “cousin Diane” was married to Dick Gass, who, of course, would be assigned the task of being my godfather.  As an eight year old sports idiot savant, perhaps minus the savant part, Dick took me to watch his friend coach a basketball team at a few practices taking place at what is now Loyola Marymount University.

His friend was Bill Sharman and that team was 1972 Los Angeles Lakers.  Now, that is a LEGIT godfather!  Wilt, Gail and Jerry were who I would pretend to be in my backyard shooting hoops, and there they were, right in front of me, the team that would set NBA records on their way to the Lakers first NBA title since they moved to L.A. in 1960.

Another cousin of mine, Tina, happened to marry an athlete who starred at Loyola in the 1960’s.  Wayne Boehle was a basketball and volleyball standout that has always been instrumental in my life and he recently delivered on a promise that he made to me.

He’d bring his friend Jerry West by my house for an interview in my garage on their way to play golf.  Now, that is a LEGIT cousin-in-law!

So, that day came and there he was, “the logo”, the NBA legend from West Virginia with matinee star-like looks walking through our house and into our backyard.  When he politely declined to take the traditional “7428 Shot”, the all-conference Loyola Lion that is Wayne Boehle promptly stepped in and drained a 13-footer under the pressure of multiple cameras, including a drone.

Then, Jerry West, one of the greatest players of all time, and most certainly the greatest executive ever, sat across from me in my garage, aka the 7428 Studio, answering questions about his remarkable life.  While some of the memorabilia in my garage was acceptable for such royalty, like my signed ball from John Wooden or my 1986 VBC Championship trophy, there was also items like my autographed picture from popcorn magnate Orville Redenbacher that hung over Jerry’s right shoulder that made me laugh inside and kept me grounded while trying to stay focused on the task at hand.

I am forever grateful to people like Dick Gass and Wayne Boehle that supported their “little” cousin and made a dream come true.  The four-part video podcast will play out over four consecutive Thursday’s, December 17th, 24th, 31st and January 7th in what we are calling a “Very Jerry Christmas”.   Watch, and please subscribe and if you would be so kind, leave us a comment at:   YouTube.com/SSDL

Notes on a Backyard Scorecard

Los Angeles -  Full disclosure, I am stealing the title for this column from the “event program” we used to print out for the Venice Backyard Championships…We stole the title from L.A. sportswriter Alan Malamud…We received great reviews from the four-part series on St. Monica High School, USC, L.A. Rams and San Diego Chargers tight end Bob Klein.  It was nice to hear from some of Bob’s friends from way back to his Corpus Christi School days in Pacific Palisades, CASSDL recently began the process of a video podcast story on Sports Illustrated “SI Kid of the Year” Juju Watkins, a 15 year-old basketball phenom that lives in Watts and attends Windward School in West Los Angeles…Juju is hoping to carry on the tradition of community service and social change that her Great-Grandfather Ted Watkins (1912-1993) began in 1965 when he formed the Watts Labor Community Action Committee (WLCAC)…Sports Stories with Denny Lennon (SSDL) has recorded such a strong following on LA36 Cable TV that you can now catch our shows seven days a week…Make sure to follow @SportsStoriesDL on Twitter, so you can vote on the “SSDL Polls” which have proved to be highly popular…In recent weeks, we determined the best teams, coach and players that football star Bob Klein payed with and for, and we will be conducting polls in the upcoming weeks to define the same for Jerry West…Look for the SSDL “Live Shows” to return in February, once contracts are renegotiated with the SSDL cast of characters and correspondents…Looking for a Christmas present idea?  Give the gift of a YouTube SSDL Subscription!  Just go to YouTube.com/SSDL and hit the “Subscribe” button.

SSDL BLOG: My Close Encounters with the NBA Draft

My Close Encounters with the NBA Draft

The 2016 Chino Hills HS Team featured Three top NBA Draft Choices

November 18, 2020

90045 -  It was the winter of 2016 in Los Angeles, and I was on my way to watch a high school team that I’d followed throughout the season, one that I thought was better than any high school team I had ever seen, and that is a long list, considering I have been watching high school basketball for 50 years.

The Verbum Dei High School (Los Angeles) teams of the 70’s blew my mind, my own St. Bernard High School (Playa del Rey) teams of the 80’s were nationally ranked in the USA Today polls, and we might as well finish off the catholic trilogy with a mention of the great Mater Dei High School (Santa Ana) teams of the 90’s and 2000’s.

Religion aside, I was fascinated by the 2015-16 Chino Hills High School boys team.  The three Ball brothers, Lonzo, Liangelo and LaMelo were fascinating. Their over-the-top father, LaVar, was a bigger than life character.  The team’s incredible freshman talent, Onyeka Okongwu, was almost more fun to watch than the Ball brothers.  They were an unselfish, unyielding, high flying act that played top bill everywhere they went.

Chino Hills had traveled to multiple states and beat the best the country had to offer.  The more astounding fact is that these players remained in their own community, attending a public school instead of a private school.  I loved the way the community of Chino Hills, a city of 75,000 people in San Bernardino County, 40 miles east of downtown Los Angeles, would line up days before home games to get tickets.

On this late February night of 2016, in the CIF-SS Open division quarterfinals, the Chino Hills Huskies would travel to play at the the Inglewood High School Sentinels, which was only a few miles from my house, and a few blocks from the Fabulous Forum, the scene of the “Showtime” Los Angeles Lakers back in the 80’s.

I rolled in with my friend Ray Castro (aka “The Boxcobbler”), chatted with my friend James Butts, the mayor of Inglewood, who I have known since he was the chief of police in Santa MonicaMayor Butts, the man that brought the Rams back to L.A., where they play in the state-of-the-art SoFi Stadium in Inglewood.

Ingle-WHAT?

I remember watching Paul Pierce playing in the same gym for the Sentinels in ’95, 13 years before he would wear green once again and win an NBA title with the Boston Celtics.  But on this night, there would be no Sentinel star player leaving the court in a wheelchair only to return to the court and lead the team to victory.  I am pretty sure only the Boston Garden has a wheelchair on hand for such theatrics.

The Huskies put on a show that night in the the “City of Champions”, routing the home team 112-78.  I may have suspected, but did not know for sure, that on that night, between me, Lonzo, LaMelo and Onyeka, three of us would be top draft choices in the NBA draft.  Lonzo was the #2 pick in the 2017 draft, LaMelo and Onyeka are projected as top five picks in tonight’s NBA draft.

I am not quite sure how I was missed in the ’86 draft, considering I had a cup of coffee with the College of the Desert Roadrunners back when future Chicago Bulls general manager Gar Foreman was the coach.  Guess the NBA already had enough 6’2” power forwards that were especially good at screening out and fouling.

Almost five years later, I do indeed put that 2016 Chino Hills team at the top of my list for all-time high school teams.  35-0, scored over 100 points 18 times, finished as State champions and named the USA Today National Champions.

Three top five drafts on the same high school team, let’s see Bronny James and Sierra Canyon School (Chatsworth) top that.

SSDL BLOG:  The ’72 Kid comes Full Circle

The ’72 Kid comes Full Circle

The Lakers Jerry West and the Rams Bob Klein Complete my 48 year Journey

November 15, 2020

90045 -  I was into sports at an early age, in fact, I cannot remember a time where I wasn’t playing or watching a game, or at least planning to do so.  By the time I was eight, I knew more about sports than most adults, as was certified time and again when I would answer various sports questions from the adults in my life.  As the youngest of seven in my family, I may not have noticed I was serving as some kind of trick pony for my older brothers and sisters.

I learned to read at higher level than I ever would have from the sports pages, advanced my math skills through understanding the statistics related to my favorite teams.  I learned to speak up by re-telling the game that Vin Scully or Chick Hearn or Dick Enberg had just described.  Sports was how I identified with the world.  My mom, Jeanette Lennon, knew exactly who I was and how much sports meant to me, and in her wisdom she became my biggest fan.  Or at least pretended to listen to all my stories with interest.

The year I turned eight,1972, is a year that is cemented in my memory.  Some people might remember ’72 as the year the band Chicago had a hit song with “Saturday in the Park”, or perhaps as the year that the iconic movie “The Godfather” was released.  The Vietnam War raged, Nixon did what guys like Nixon do, but me, I kept my eye on the ball.

I remember that in 1972 three of my favorite teams had incredible years, I played on my first team and my sports heroes were somehow within in my reach.

In January of ’72, I was as excited as a too tall for his age, all knowing sports savant (idiot in the rest of my life) could be, because I love me some basketball and finally, finally, I would get to play on an organized team.  Dale Currier, a close friend I would lose at age 19, and yours truly were the only two third graders that made the St. Mark 4th grade “Mighty Might” basketball team.  That’s right!  Recognize!  We may have only played two games, but they were HUGE games!

In addition to getting to play on an “official team”, my mom would let me stay up late on Thursdays and put off my chores on Saturdays in order to watch my beloved UCLA Bruins basketball team.  I have been fascinated with John Wooden for as long as I can remember.  In ’72, they did what they always did when I was a kid, as in for the 6th straight year, they won the NCAA tournament.  They finished off a perfect season with a 30-0 mark, beating Florida State for the championship at the Los Angeles Sports Arena.  How could basketball season get any better?  Funny you should ask.

I was incredibly fortunate that my godfather, Dick Gass, was friends with the Lakers Coach, Bill Sharman.  That meant I got to go to a handful of their practices at Loyola Marymount University (at that time Loyola University).  Are you kidding me?  I would sit on the floor and watch my heroes, Wilt Chamberlain, Gail Goodrich, and Jerry FREAKING West?!  I would wait until they went to get water, grab a ball and shoot on a hoop, and every once in awhile one of them would pass me the ball and talk to me.  Blew my mind.

‘72 was the magical season the Lakers won an NBA record 33 games in a row, which was memorialized with a collectible team photo by my favorite childhood eatery, Der Wienerschnitzel.  That now framed photo is a prized possession, and I stay loyal to “Der Wee Wee” by eating a few mustard dogs every year.

The ’72 Lakers stormed to a 69-13 regular season mark, another record, then won the NBA championship over the New York Knicks in five games.  Yes!  I didn’t care they had lost in the NBA finals seven times previously since they had been in LA, they won the year I started going to their practices.  I would celebrate the team when shooting on my backyard hoop, pretending I was Jerry West, and now #44 was a champion, and I felt part of it.

The bounce in my step was not affected by the last place NHL finish of the Kings.  I did not know how to ice skate, and did not quite appreciate the sport yet.  The boys of summer, however, my Dodgers, always had my attention.  They finished with a respectable 85 wins, but that wasn’t good enough to beat out the Reds in the division, so I turned to football with clear eyes on my Trojans and Rams gridiron prospects.

Okay, okay, I know it might appear as though I am “cherry picking” my teams, UCLA in basketball and USC in football, but allow me to explain.  I want all Los Angeles teams to do well.  I wanted then, as I do now, any and everyone to recognize that LA is the sports capital of the world.  I have felt this way forever.  I am true to who I was and that is still who I am.

I’d prefer the Lakers and Clippers in the NBA West Conference finals, then for the Lakers to advance and get another Larry O’Brien trophy.  I want the Rams and Chargers in the Super Bowl, with the Rams hoisting the Lombardi.  I want UCLA and USC undefeated in basketball and/or football when they meet, and the Bruins to add to their NCAA record of basketball championships, while the Trojans to add their legendary status in football.

That is just what the mighty Trojans did that football season.  The John McKay coached team went undefeated, beat Notre Dame and UCLA, won the Rose Bowl and were named National Champions.  I loved USC football, their tradition, the fact they had a rival like Notre Dame and what that game meant on a national level.

Throwing the football in the air, then diving on the backyard grass to make a spectacular catch, occupied my time as much as shooting hoops did during basketball season.  My “go to” guy on the Rams was tight end Bob Klein.  First of all, he was playing the position I knew I would be playing in the NFL.  Second, he went to USC, my favorite college football team.  Third, my family knew him from St. Monica High School in Santa Monica, so that was another mind blowing moment.  The ’72 Rams sputtered to a third place finish in the NFC West, but Klein did catch 29 passes on the year, his best season to date.

Those days of imaginary backyard games, pretending to be my heroes like West and Klein, are forever etched in my mind.  I’d run in the house, brag to my mom about a spectacular shot or catch, and she would tell me she was proud of me.  Then she would make sure to tell me it was okay to brag to her, but no one else would want to hear it.

Hmm.  That “no bragging to others” may have been the toughest lesson to learn.  Still is, by the way, as evidenced by me writing this blog to brag about this past week.

On Monday, Jerry West came to my house, politely declined to take the “7428 Shot” on my backyard hoop, but he did watch his friend, my cousin-in-law Wayne Boehle, knock a shot down and I noticed a competitive streak flash across this face.  Then, “the logo” sat in my garage (aka the “7428 Studio”) to talk for over an hour about his legendary life and times.

On Friday, Bob Klein met me at Casablanca Restaurant in Venice, talked for close to two hours about his life, the 1967 National Champion Trojans, the Rams, the Chargers and his family.

Incredible.  Astounding.  And to think, it all started in my backyard.  I feel so lucky to have those moments.

On Saturday, I basked in the glory.  On Sunday, I wrote this blog.

I wish I could brag to my Mom, who I lost almost four years ago, I’m pretty sure she would have been proud.

SSDL NEWS: BUCKET! GEETER WINS EASTBAY!

August 7, 2020

It’s Geeter for the Win at the Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out!

#1 seeded Laker Broadcaster Engineers Epic Comeback

90045 - On January 23rd, Chris “Geeter” McGee calmly took a pass for his pre-interview 7428 basketball shot from Sports Stories with Denny Lennon (SSDL) producer Marlee Rice and knocked down a 20 footer, calling “Bucket” while the ball was in the air.  The All-CIF standout from Crespi High School and Los Angeles Laker Studio Host knows his hoops, but what he didn’t know then was that “Bucket” would launch him into Eastbay immortality.

Geeter, a popular MC from his days with the AVP pro beach volleyball tour, teamed with his charity partner, Stillpoint Family Resources, and engineered a historic comeback to win the championship.  Team Geeter came back from a 60% deficit to win the first ever Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out by a margin of 72% to 28%.

The epic victory over #11 seeded Sierra Canyon Athletic Director Rock Pillsbury and his charity, the Harold and Carole Pump Foundation, marked the biggest comeback in the history of the event.  An astounding 508 votes were cast in the championship matchup.  The champions will accept their $1000 Eastbay gift card from Eastbay’s Adam Wald tonight on SSDL5.  The 5:00pm live show can be seen tonight (August 7th) on:

YouTube.com/SportsStorieswithDennyLennon.

The Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out matched up Sports Stories with Denny Lennon (SSDL) video podcast guests pre-interview (pre-Covid) basketball shots against one another in a 12-team single elimination tournament, the outcome of each matchup decided by voting on Twitter @SportsStoriesDL.  The virtual event, which began on July 6th, offered the grand prize of a $1000 Eastbay gift card for the winner’s charity.

The unexpected wild popularity of the tournament attracted not only thousands of votes, but was by featured by popular ESPN anchor Neil Everett on Everett and Stan Verrett’s national ESPN Radio show.  The “Eastbay” also attracted retweets from high profile athletes, coaches and celebrities.

Behind the scenes content, including promotional videos and an epic post matchup tirade from LA City Section and Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductee, sportscaster Randy Rosenbloom, was made available for free at www.patreon.com/DennyLennon.

On his way to the now coveted Eastbay championship, Team Geeter dispatched of #GirlDad Scott Rice in the quarterfinals and volleyball legend Mike Boehle in the semifinals.  Interesting enough, the Eastbay championship matchup took place without the participation of the King, as in in King James, LeBron JamesLeBron did not make the dreaded “Sophie’s Choice” between the franchise he plays for, the Lakers, or the school his son Bronny attends, Sierra Canyon.

After a highly successful inaugural event, look for the Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out to return with news twists, turns and stories once more pre-interview shots are launched.

SSDL News:  ROCK ROLLS INTO EASTBAY FINAL!

August 4, 2020

McGee and Pillsbury to Battle for the Championship of the Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out

90045 - Rock Pillsbury, the Athletic Director of the top high school sports program in the country, Sierra Canyon School (Chatsworth), and his charity, The Harold and Carole Pump Foundation, may have been seeded #11, but they have performed like a top seed en route to the finals of the Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out.

The Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out matches up Sports Stories with Denny Lennon (SSDL) video podcast guests pre-interview basketball shots against one another in a 12-team single elimination tournament.  The championship team (guest and charity) of the event, which will conclude on August 7th, will receive a $1000 Eastbay gift card for the charity.

Behind the scenes content, including post matchup interviews and promotional videos are available for free at www.patreon.com/DennyLennon.  The Patreon link is also available at www.SportsStoriesPodcast.com.

In the opening round, Rock beat back the power of the military and the worldwide leader in sports to chalk up the win.  Mike McKay, founder of The Heroes’ Movement, was promoted by popular ESPN anchor Neil Everett on Everett’s national radio show, but still came up short against the rock solid Rock.

In the quarterfinals, Rock made like Rocky and knocked out the Hall of Fame Ring announcer Jimmy Lennon, Jr., then laid down the law with a 70% to 30% semifinal victory over LMU athlete and attorney Wayne Boehle.

Now Rock will take on the #1 seed and the greatest franchise in sports history.  Chris “Geeter” McGee, the popular MC from his days with the AVP pro beach volleyball tour and the current

studio host for the The Los Angeles Lakers, has teamed with Stillpoint Family Resources to dispatch of #GirlDad Scott Rice in the quarterfinals and volleyball legend Mike Boehle in the semifinals.

Geeter certainly will need the support of his charity, the AVP and the Lakers, as well as anything else he can muster to win the coveted Eastbay title.  Rock has corralled the community of Sierra Canyon and the Pump Foundation along with his home state of Texas in racking up a tournament record amount of votes.

Interesting enough, the Eastbay championship may come down to the support of the King, as in in King James, LeBron James.  Will LeBron through his support behind the franchise he plays for, the Lakers, or behind the school his son Bronny attends, Sierra Canyon

The matchup for the championship begins on August 5th at 12pm (PT) and concludes August 7th at 12pm (PT).

The final matchup on twitter @SportsStoriesDL, allows one vote per matchup per supporter.  To better inform voters, links to the SSDL video podcast interviews with each of the finalist has been included below.

MB and Randy Turn up the “Star Power” at Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out!

Sports Stars Retweets make for Classic Finish

90045 - With three hours to go in an epic back and forth battle between a champion volleyball athlete and coach and a hall of fame sportscaster, the lead was razor thin.  The team of Mike Boehle (MB) and My Stuff Bags had retweets from NBA star Brent Barry and pro baseball coach Kelly Nicholson, while the team of Randy Rosenbloom and Make a Wish pulled in support from radio personality Paul Loeffler and Josh Cooper, the editor for The Athletic LA.  MB had a late surge to secure the win by a  final score of 56% to 44%.  The VBC champion and Loyola/MB Surf coach has advanced to the “Final Four” of the Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out and set up a semifinal showdown with Los Angeles Lakers Studio Host and play by play announcer Chris “Geeter” McGee.

The MB win, monitored independently by the California Gaming Control Commission, was preceded by an accusatorial tirade sent out via video by Rosenbloom.  That video, as well as other exclusive content, is available for free at www.patreon.com/DennyLennon.  The Patreon link is also available at www.SportsStoriesPodcast.com.

No word yet as to Rosenbloom’s thoughts about the outcome of this contest.

The first two quarterfinals set voter participation records and have now set up a matchup that just may break twitter.  MB vs. Geeter:  My Stuff Bags vs. Stillpoint Family Resources, Loyola vs. Crespi, VBC champ vs. Six-Man champ, the list goes on…This semifinal matchup, which will begin on July 30th, promises to be a “Battle Royale”.

The next quarterfinal, which runs from 12pm (PT) July 24th to 12pm (PT) July 26th, matches the #2 seed Lynn Guerin vs. an upset winner in the opening round, #10 seed Wayne BoehleGuerin, who has teamed with Joni and Friends Disability Ministry, is the founder of the John R. Wooden CourseLynn was the only guest to take the shot from the right side of the court and he promptly knocked down a classic Coach Wooden banker.  Wayne, father to MB who shares the same charity in My Stuff Bags, was a standout athlete at Loyola University in the 60’s and the lead attorney for the school in the 90’s for the Hank Gathers Case.

SSDL NewsFlash: GEETER BEATS RICE @ EASTBAY 7428 SHOOT-OUT!

July 20, 2020

Geeter Makes Fried Rice at Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out

Laker Studio Host Comes Back from 15 Down to Advance to Final Four

90045 - Los Angeles Laker studio host Chris “Geeter” McGee knows full well the story of the epic Laker basketball comeback in the 7th game of 2000 Western Conference finals against the Portland Trailblazers.  Down 15 points in the fourth quarter, the Lakers staged a historic comeback, exclamation point provided by the Kobe to Shaq alley-oop, advancing to win the first of Kobe’s five NBA titles.  Like his favorite team, and friend Kobe, the #1 seeded McGee survived a thrilling and spectacular matchup that saw several lead changes and a new record amount of votes.  Geeter engineered, with an “alley-oop retweet” from a friend, to come back from a deep deficit and defeat #GirlDad Scott Rice 53% to 47% and advance to the semifinals of the Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out.

The event matches up Sports Stories with Denny Lennon (SSDL) video podcast guests pre-interview basketball shots against one another in a 12-team single elimination tournament.  The championship team (guest and charity) of the event, which will conclude on August 7th, will receive a $1000 Eastbay gift card for the charity.

The next quarterfinal, which runs from 12pm (PT) July 21st to 12pm (PT) July 23rd, may very well be the most heated matchup of this or any round of the event.  #4 seeded Mike Boehle (MB), teamed with My Stuff Bags as his charity, is an accomplished volleyball player with a professional beach tournament win and two Venice Backyard Championships.  As a coach, he was won multiple region, state and national titles.  He may be facing his biggest challenge to date in Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out quarterfinals, LA City Section and Southern California Jewish Sports Hall of Fame inductee, sportscaster Randy Rosenbloom.

Rosenbloom, who has partnered with Make a Wish as his charity for the tournament, raised concerns in an opening round post matchup interview about a potential controversy in the matchup against BoehleRandy suggested that MB’s charity, My Stuff Bags, who’s CEO Janeen Lennon Holmes is sister to the tournament host, combined with the fact that MB is the cousin to the Lennon family, will create a major disadvantage for him.  The post matchup accusatorial tirade is a must watch and available for free at www.patreon.com/DennyLennon.  The Patreon link is also available at www.SportsStoriesPodcast.com.

All quarterfinal and subsequent matchups will continue to take place on twitter @SportsStoriesDL, one vote per matchup per supporter.  Links to the SSDL video podcast interviews of each of the quarterfinalists have been included below, which will further educate our twitter followers and Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out legion of fans.

Winners of the quarterfinal matchups will appear July 24th and July 31st on the SSDL5 YouTube Live Friday “Happy Hour Show” to promote their team accomplishment of making the “Eastbay 7428 Shoot-Out Final Four”.
